Wood and charcoal energy properties of Cenostigma macrophyllum: subsidies to sustainable use PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

This study aimed to evaluate the quality Cenostigma macrophyllum Tul wood for energetic use and to determine the yields and charcoal properties produced at different carbonization temperatures. Discs with 3 cm of thickness were obtained from stem basal positions, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of commercial height. The discs were split in two parts. One was used to determine wood properties and the other was carbonized at final temperatures of 400 ºC, 500 ºC and 600 ºC for bio-reducer evaluation . Basic density (1.2 g cm-3), lignin content (34%), higher calorific value (4,845 cal g-1) and gravimetric yield in charcoal (GYC) at 400 ºC (41.5%) were the highlights. Wood and charcoal quality from planted forest in Minas Gerais State, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The objective of this study was to evaluate the wood and charcoal quality of young Eucalyptus spp. trees, and to verify the influence of age and clone on the energy performance of these fuels. It was sampled the clones 1277 and 0321 of Eucalyptus spp. in two ages (46 and 58 months). The characteristics determined in the wood were: chemical molecular and elementary, basic density, carbon stocks and lignin by volume, the energy density and heating values (higher and lower). The charcoal was produced in an electric furnace (muffle) with the final temperature of 450 °C. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of planting sites on the elemental chemical composition of Eucalyptus urophylla wood and the quality of its charcoal and to verify the statistical relations among the properties measured in wood and charcoal. It was used twelve 7-years old trees from E. urophylla clone from Curvelo, Itacambira and Turmalina counties located in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The elemental chemical composition (C, H, N, S and O) of the wood and C/H and C/N relations were determined. The wood was carbonized in a laboratorial muffle furnace. Wood hygroscopicity of three forestry species deteriorated by Nasutitermes termites PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The objective of this work was to evaluate hygroscopicity modification of Eucalyptus dunnii, E. saligna and Corymbia maculata wood due to termites attack. Using samples measuring 20 x 20 x 150 mm³ (tangential x radial x longitudinal) the equilibrium moisture content (MCE), linear contractions of the tangential and radial planes (βT e βR), contraction anisotropy (CAβ), water absorption (AA) and water absorption rate (TAA) of healthy and deteriorated wood by Nasutitermes termites were evaluated. Wood Production and genetic gain of grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) provenances at Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

A provenance/progenies trial of grevílea (Grevillea robusta Cunn.) was established in the Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil. The purpose was to identify genetically superior individuals in order to assure good material for future seed orchard. The genetic matherial was based on 60 half-sib progenies from eighteen Australian provenances and one control. Progenies were evaluated in randomized blocks with seven replications, five plants per plot and spacing of 3 m x 3 m (9 m2 per plant). Significant gains were estimated through selection of the 200 best trees (23,33%), for cilindric volume, at 10 years age, based on genetic values, aiming to establish a seedling seed orchard; or selecting the best twenty trees (33,33%), towards a clonal seed orchard.

Wood-plastic composites from residues of three forest species PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

This study aimed to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites using materials of low processing level. Residues from carpentry as wood shavings from three forest species (Pinus elliottii, Hovenia dulcis and Maclura tinctoria), and thermoplastic type were used. Data were submitted to Duncan’s test with 95% confidence. In relation to the modulus of rupture (MOR) and elasticity- (MOE), all treatments presented successful results, without difference. For the tests of internal bond and screw pullout, the results were not satisfactory. For this last test, the best result was for Hovenia dulcis. Zoneamento climático para a grevílea (Grevillea robusta) para o Estado do Paraná PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

A grevílea (Grevillea robusta A. Cunn) é uma espécie arbórea originária da Austrália e foi introduzida no Brasil no final do século 19. Novas progênies foram importadas e testadas pela Embrapa Florestas desde a década de 1990. Apesar do grande interesse em seu plantio no Paraná, até o momento, não há um zoneamento climático ou edafoclimático para a espécie. Foram definidos critérios restritivos e favoráveis ao cultivo da grevílea para o Estado do Paraná: temperatura média anual e temperatura média anual do mês de julho. As áreas mais indicadas para o plantio comercial situam-se no norte, noroeste, oeste e sudoeste, áreas mais quentes do estado.
